Removing the Artificiality: The Key to More Effective Training

This article was inspired by conversations with training professionals across the military, law enforcement, fire service, and critical infrastructure communities who share a common goal: creating more realistic training environments that better prepare personnel for real-world emergencies.



Every trainer faces the same challenge: how do you safely prepare personnel for situations that are inherently dangerous, chaotic, and unpredictable?


Whether training firefighters to operate inside a smoke-filled structure, law enforcement officers to respond to an active threat, or military personnel to react to an explosion, the goal is the same—to prepare people to make sound decisions under pressure. Unfortunately, many training programs still rely heavily on artificial cues that require participants to imagine critical events rather than experience them.


Recently, during a conversation with Captain James Campbell, Training Specialist with Hanford Mission Integration Solutions, the protective force supporting the Department of Energy's Hanford Site, he made a statement that perfectly captured the challenge facing modern training programs. His goal, he explained, is to "remove more of the artificiality from training." While simple, that statement reflects a growing realization across military, law enforcement, security, and fire service organizations: the more realistic the training environment becomes, the more effectively personnel can prepare for real-world emergencies.


For decades, instructors have compensated for limitations in training tools by verbally describing events that participants are expected to react to. A trainer may announce that an explosion has occurred, tell responders there is a hazardous materials release, or explain that visibility has been reduced by smoke. While these methods communicate information, they often bypass one of the most important aspects of decision-making—recognizing and interpreting environmental cues independently.



In a real emergency, no instructor is present to explain what just happened. Firefighters are not told where smoke is coming from or what color and the behavior of the smoke they are seeing. Police officers responding to a critical incident are not informed every time conditions change around them. Military personnel do not receive advance notice before an explosion occurs. Instead, they rely on their senses to gather information, assess threats, and make decisions. Effective training should require those same skills.


OPCON's CEO Jason White often shares stories from his time in the Marine Corps to illustrate how training has historically relied on imagination. During exercises, his Gunnery Sergeant would sometimes slap two 2x4 boards together near Marines and yell, "There's an explosion. You've taken damage to both your legs. What are you going to do?" The training objective was valid, but the realism was limited by the tools available at the time. The Marines were required to imagine the event rather than experience it.


Today, technology allows trainers to bridge that gap. Instead of verbally describing an explosion, instructors can create realistic audible signatures, visual effects, and environmental conditions that force participants to identify what occurred and determine an appropriate response. Rather than being told what happened, trainees must observe, process information, and make decisions on their own. This shift from explanation to experience creates a far more realistic training environment and develops skills that are directly transferable to real-world incidents.



Smoke provides an excellent example of this concept. Many organizations use fog machines to reduce visibility during training, and while they accomplish that objective, they often fail to communicate meaningful information about the scenario itself. If the training objective involves a chlorine leak, should participants simply be told that chlorine is present while white fog fills the room? Or should the visual signature itself communicate the hazard? Utilizing colored smoke that resembles a chlorine release creates an immediate visual cue that trainees must recognize and interpret. The environment begins teaching the lesson rather than the instructor.


This approach does more than improve realism—it improves stress inoculation. Real emergencies are stressful because they force people to process incomplete information while operating under pressure. Heart rates increase, cognitive workloads rise, and decision-making becomes more difficult. When realistic visual, audible, and environmental effects are integrated into training, participants experience a level of uncertainty and urgency that is difficult to replicate through verbal instruction alone. Over time, repeated exposure to these conditions helps personnel become more comfortable making decisions under stress, increasing their confidence and performance when real emergencies occur.


Realism also increases engagement. One of the most common challenges trainers face is preventing exercises from becoming "routine". When participants know exactly what is going to happen, training can become an exercise in checking boxes rather than learning. Introducing realistic effects forces trainees to remain alert, pay attention to their surroundings, and actively solve problems. The result is training that is more memorable, more immersive, and ultimately more effective.


The objective of modern training should not be to create bigger spectacles or more dramatic scenarios. It should be to create environments where personnel must rely on observation, critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills just as they would in the field. Whether training firefighters, law enforcement officers, military personnel, or security professionals, the principle remains the same: the less artificial the training environment becomes, the better prepared people will be when faced with a real emergency.


As Captain Campbell stated, the goal is simple: remove more of the artificiality from training. By replacing explanations with experiences and scripted cues with realistic stimuli, trainers can better prepare their personnel for the challenges they will inevitably face when lives are on the line.
